Maurice Fulton returns with his Boof moniker to deliver an album richly steeped in ’80s funk. But unlike so many other artists, The Hyndrangeas Whisper avoids condescending to the genres he’s inspired by, using the radio-friendly funk of The Gap Band and Chic as a jumping-off point to explore, venturing into heady, atmospheric territory with jazz-influenced underpinnnings on the title track, for instance. This isn’t to say The Hydrangeas Whisper comes off as academic—far from it. “Birgit Boogie” is a dance jam that sounds evocative of its influences yet also free from time and space, like it could start a party in any decade, with an unstoppable bassline, handclaps and bongos setting the stage for spacey synth runs and funk guitars. Similarly “Cat Soulcat Strut” is rhythmically adventurous but also crowd-pleasing in the most essential way, its melodic organ lines and splashy dynamics drumming up tons of energy. Echoing house tracks like “Backlash” and “Pete Found His Z” keep the party going, even if they stray from the formula a bit, but no matter—the album retains a relatively tight focus, returning to synth-funk for the irresistible “Just on the Swings.” Though Fulton’s work stands on its own and shouldn’t just be lumped in with Daft Punk, anyone who was particularly fond of the R&B-influenced tracks on that band’s Random Access Memories album will find a lot to love here. Great both as brainy headphone music or DJ fodder, The Hydrangeas Whisper is a terrific listen.
