A very interesting instrument, I've played many other brands I can compare it to. Keyboard action is a spring-loaded type, a little clacky and the keys are not full-length like a piano, but not terrible. Display is the bomb, contrast adjustable and even switches positive to negative-dark background, light icons to the opposite and is user selectable. Best display I've seen. Operating system-very impressed. Having used every other major manufacturer's keyboards, this is the most well-thought out system I've ever used. From recording, to selecting songs, styles or MIDI files, even editing samples and sounds or selecting sounds, layered, split multis or single this thing is amazing-can switch from anything to anything else in seconds. Now sounds-the most important aspect of any keyboard workstation. Only 8MB ROM, but the important sounds are there and are excellent-acoustic pianos, electric pianos-organs, orchestral instruments and special effects-all sound acceptable IMHO and I am old-school, played everything including the originals this emulates. The acoustic piano is a tad brittle sounding, but actually holds up better than I initially thought-no ear fatigue like I usually get with sampled (fake) pianos, has a great bottom end-very smooth samples across 76 keys and is clear in a mix. Organs-I have some sampled B3 and C3s, because the stock organs are not enough but a few are excellent and good rotary effect built-in. Since this can hold 8Mb of DRAM (non-volatile) and an additional 32Mb of SIMMs as volatile RAM-can get quite nice with custom samples. Brass, woodwinds, strings-the saxes and flutes which have a breathy attack option which is nice-there is a flute that emulates the Ian Anderson/Herbie Mann type of vocal effect-very different. Brass sounds too are somewhat unique in that there are 'rips'-up and down like a brass player might execute (not me!) Basses, guitars-lead sounds-really can do everything. No wimpy, weasle-farts here. Since there are dual resonant filters, can do real nice analog emulations if you can program-and with this you can learn to program, the large screens again kick in nicely. Finally-sequencer-easy if you've had any experience with, this should be child's play to you. Even if not, doesn't take much to figure out. The sounds put together in an arrangement are not as transparent sounding as I'd like-but aren't bad. And although some have criticized the rubber buttons 1)they're backlit and easily viewable in the dark and elsewhere and 2)are holding up very well, even with my crab-claw fingers and 3) there are many, each dedicated to something important, how nice! Like transposing the entire instrument, including complete arrangements up or down an octave with a button press. There are very few buried menus-with large pages in the screen, there is room for alot ofs alot of data). This is truly a rocket ship of a keyboard, alot of fun.
